Can Border Collies Live Outside?

Border Collies are not only fluffy, adorable, and loving, they are a ridiculously smart, hard-working breed. They were bred to be herding dogs, so they are good at problem-solving, and they love being outside.

Border Collies are extremely energetic dogs and they like to be outdoors. When it comes to extreme weather or temperature changes, there are times when it might be better to bring your Border Collie inside.

Here is a quick guide of when your Border Collie is fine outside versus when they would prefer to be cozy indoors.

What Temperatures Can Border Collies Handle?

As with any breed that loves to run and play, your Border Collie will prefer to spend a good deal of its time outside. It is important to keep in mind that even though Border Collies may love being outside, they are not meant to handle the more extreme temperatures.

So, keep an eye on the weather and be ready to bring your dog inside if either of the following temperature extremes occurs in your area.

Border Collie Running in the Snow

One of the benefits of a Border Collie’s long, thick fur coat is that is designed to handle the winter cold better than many other dog breeds. In fact, most Border Collies enjoy running and playing outside in colder temperatures or frolicking in the snow because they will not overheat.

That being said, Border Collies are not able to handle sub-zero temperatures. If the temperatures in winter start to dip below 32 degrees, it is time to bring your furry friend inside more often.

Now, in the summer, how hot is too hot for a Border Collie? Border Collies can tolerate warmer weather than other breeds with thick fur coats but they are still vulnerable to heatstroke.

A Border Collie can remain fairly active in temperatures between 85 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit but you may start to notice your dog becoming less active and drink increasing amounts of water as the temperatures continue to climb.

Can Border Collies Sleep Outside?

The simple answer is yes, as long as the outside temperature is not below freezing or extremely hot, your Border Collie can sleep outside. Oftentimes, your dog may enjoy sleeping outdoors, their breed was meant to live a farm life of herding and protecting, so they were designed to sleep outdoors to guard their flock.

Now, this does not mean that you should leave your Border Collie alone outside all of the time. Border Collies are social and loyal dogs and need as much love and attention as any other breed. So, as long as you are giving your dog enough affection and providing for their physical and mental well-being, then letting them sleep outside is a fine option for your Border Collie.

Do Border Collies Need Outdoor Gear?

Border Collies are hardy breeds and a healthy dog will not need a sweater or coat for the winter months, like other breeds that are more fragile or have thinner, shorter fur coats. Unless your Border Collie is still a very young puppy or if your dog is older and frailer. Then, protective outdoor gear might be needed when walking or playing with your dog outside in the cold.

Should Dog Houses Be Used for Extended Stays Outside?

While Border Collies love the great outdoors, if you are planning on having yours sleep outside, it is best to provide a safe place for him to sleep. A dog house will keep your dog safe from wind, rain, and other elements.

Even if you are planning on having your Border Collie sleep in the house, it is still a good idea to provide a dog house if your pup will be spending several hours outside at a time. It is a simple comfort you can provide for your dog.
